RE/MAX Sponsors Texas Sentinels Foundation ‘Hole’ at San Antonio Golf Tournament

RE/MAX of Texas has announced that the company will be sponsoring a Three Par Hole at November’s San Antonio RE/MAX Golf Tournament. Scheduled for November 11, 2009 at the Silverhorn Golf Club, the tournament is a massive affair, bringing together 27 RE/MAX offices from around San Antonio to raise money for local Children’s Healthcare.

The charity tournament, now in its 4th year, traditionally raises funds for Children’s Miracle Network, but is branching out to include other important causes in San Antonio. San Antonio Texas Sentinel Jorge De Leon will be present on the course challenging participants to support Texas Sentinels Foundation and wounded veterans.

We’ve all come a long way since we started the Texas Sentinels Foundation back in 2007. But all the work and generous support have paid off and our program has taken flight in another Texas city. On October 27, 2009, the Texas Sentinels Foundation in alliance with Bay Area Builders Association Support Our Troops named a second Texas Sentinel: (Ret.) Army Sergeant Jorge De Leon.

In 2004, Army Sergeant Jorge De Leon lost his leg and suffered loss of hearing and Traumatic Brain Injury in Afghanistan. While maneuvering his Humvee to avoid an insurgent attack, he drove over an anti-tank mine. Wheelchair-bound and despairing of how he would take care of his family after being discharged, Jorge dedicated himself to recovery. Today he walks with the use of a computer controlled prosthetic leg and has joined the Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes full-time as a national spokesman.

Veterans, community leaders and of course RE/MAX Associates from around San Antonio attended yesterday’s luncheon to meet Jorge and pledge their support to him. Texas Congressional Representative Frank Corte attended and spoke on the efforts the state of Texas is making on behalf of our troops. RE/MAX Associate Patsy Oakley of RE/MAX Preferred took up the call to serve as our enthusiastic San Antonio Team Leader, heading a team of RE/MAX Associates that will raise $100,000 for the San Antonio Texas Sentinel Scholarship. The De Leon family’s new custom home will be provided courtesy of San Antonio builder Edward Martin of Tilson Homes and the Texas Sentinels Foundation.

But of course, we still have more work ahead of us. We want to keep the momentum going in the Metroplex, where we hope to have another Texas Sentinel Candidate before the end of the year. Our event in San Antonio received excellent news coverage by major local networks ABC (click here to view video) and Fox (click here to view video) as well as the San Antonio Express News.

Thank you for all your support!

Representatives from RE/MAX® and the Texas Sentinels Foundation joined the Bay Area Builders Association (BABA) in Friendswood to honor and welcome Sentinels of Freedom, League City beneficiary of community effort to assist severely wounded returning military personnel. Retired Marine Corporal Donny Daughenbaugh, a veteran wounded in Iraq was present along with his family at the BABA-hosted luncheon where he received the honors. The luncheon was attended by a number of notable area officials, including Congressman Pete Olson of the 22nd Congressional District.

We’ve had an exciting summer with the selection and honoring of our Sentinel of Freedom, League City recipient, Marine Corporal Donny Daughenbaugh. So much thanks is due to the Deborah Bly Team from RE/MAX Space Center who worked for over two years raising the funds necessary to give the Daughenbaugh family the chance they deserve to rebuild their lives and have an amazing future. There’s more work to be done and even more exciting events on the horizon.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the immense support of the community and contributors. Your generosity and positive energy have helped a soldier and his family gain a second chance, and we are so grateful for your collaboration in this cause. There are more wounded soldiers who need our help and we know we can make a significant difference in the lives of these men and women who have sacrifices so much for their country.

Thank you again for your continued support and good will.
